Vice President Wu Zhenwu Headed a Delegation to Visit Spanish and Brazilian Universities upon Invitation

From December 10 to 16, Vice President Wu Zhenwu headed a delegation of 6 to visit the University of Barcelona, University of Valencia in Spain and University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Zhao Binfu, dean of the School of Archaeology, Cai Lidong, dean of the School of Law, Pan Haiying, dean of the School of Foreign Language Education, Bai Bing, vice director of the Office of Global Engagement and other delegation members attended the visit.

On December 11, Bibiana Crespo, Representative of the President for International Affairs, Antonio Gil, Representative of the Office of International Development Service, Jaume Buxeda, associate dean of the Department of Geography and History, Mar Campins, associate dean of International Affairs and Scientific Research of the School of Law, and Eva Martínez, Academic Director of the Spanish Language Research Center from the University of Barcelona held a meeting with the delegation. Bibiana gave a comprehensive introduction about the history of the university, campus planning, measures to promote internationalization, faculties and curriculum, teaching innovation and quality guarantee, scientific research, cultural activities and community services, and exchanged views on projects of mutual interests, such as short-term and long-term student programs, the exchange of teachers to lecture and receive trainings and cooperative scientific research. President Wu briefed the status quo of the development in Jilin University (JLU) and introduced measures and achievements in promoting internationalization in JLU as a key comprehensive university under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. While exchanging opinions on disciplines, participants had an in-depth communication about discipline setting, cooperative projects and teaching and research service systems of both universities. The School of Law of both universities shared methods of cultivating students and guaranteeing teaching quality and reached consensus on opening summer courses of Spanish Law in University of Barcelona, conducting cooperative scientific researches based on the General Data Protection Regulation and other topics. The School of Archaeology of both universities had an in-depth exchange on talent cultivation and faculty exchanges. They also communicated on language education; the School of Foreign Language Education will actively introduce excellent Spanish language teachers into JLU.

On December 13, during the visit to the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia, the delegation had a talk with Vicente Andreu, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia and Zhang Daisheng, Chinese Director of the Institute on topics of the development of Confucius Institute and the production of multilingual Confucius Institute periodicals for the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). Afterwards, the delegation exchanged views with Amparo Ricós, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Translation and Communication, Sergio Maruenda, Associate Dean, and Ana Rosa Calero, Associate Dean of the Faculty of International Affairs on foreign language education, education resource sharing, joint cultivation of students and scientific research cooperation. The two sides agreed to jointly facilitate the establishment of partnership so as to advance practical cooperation in related disciplines.

On December 15, the delegation visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and had a discussion with the representatives of teachers and volunteers from the that Confucius Institute. The two sides shared their practices and experience in Chinese studies, Chinese language teaching and the development of Confucius Institute. Wu Zhenwu said that the Confucius Institute jointly developed by Jilin University and the University of Buenos Aires and the Confucius Institute at the University of Sao Paulo are both located in Latin America; the two Institutes could share Chinese studies and Chinese language teaching resources to develop towards “Chinese language +” that includes two-way cultural communication and vocational training while continuing Chinese language training and education, so as to provide quality Chinese language teaching and social services to teachers and students of both universities, the local people, people from all walks of life and Chinese and foreign-invested enterprises.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Valencia was launched on November 28, 2007. It was awarded as “Confucius Institute of the Year” in 2009, 2010 and 2017; the director of the Institute was granted “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award of the Year” in 2011 and 2012; the Institute was awarded as theModel Confucius Institute” in 2015; in 2017, the Institute was awarded the prize “Portada del Mes” of Levante-EMV newspaper of the Valencia Region; it was granted the yearly merit of culture by the Government of the Community of Valencia; the Chinese Spanish Confucius Institute Periodical run by this Confucius Institute was granted the first award of Technological Innovation by La Razón.

As one of the three largest and most important universities in Brazil, the University of Sao Paulo is an extremely successful model of multi-campus university in the world. It is one of the three public universities financed by the state government of Sao Paulo. According to the US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2019, it ranks the 459th in the world, the 8th in Latin America and the 4th in Brazil.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Sao Paulo was launched on November 26, 2008 as the first Confucius Institute in Brazil. It was awarded as “Confucius Institute of the Year” in 2010, 2012 and 2016.
