Jilin University–The University of Sheffield Exchange Week held in Jilin University

During April 8-11, Jilin University-The University of Sheffield Exchange Week was successfully held in Jilin University. Sir Keith Burnett, the president of the University of Sheffield with 5 faculties visit our university and took part in various activities of the exchange week. President of Jilin University Li Yuanyuan and Sir Keith Burnett jointly the Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between Jilin University and The University of Sheffield, establishing an official university-level exchange relationship between the two universities.

Li Yuanyuan attended the opening ceremony of the exchange week and delivered a speech. The opening ceremony was hosted by Dr. Zhang Guangcui, Director of the Office of Global Engagement. Heads of relevant units including the President’s Office, the Postgraduate School, the Teaching Research Office, the Office of Global Engagement, School of Chemistry and School of Life Science participated in the opening ceremony. In his speech, Li Yuanyuan expressed his warm welcome to the president of The University of Sheffield and his team, and reviewed the pragmatic cooperation that the two universities had started in disciplines like life science, chemistry and the science of law. He said the two schools have great prospects for cooperation in the fields of science, engineering and medicine. In the future, the two universities could work together in a practical way in joint talent cultivation, joint frontier scientific research, and establishment of joint labs or research centers to address new challenges facing human beings, such as population aging, food safety, artificial intelligence, and common diseases of human and animal, and to promote the progress of human civilization.

Keith Burnett expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of Jilin University in his speech, as well as his agreement with the future cooperation model of the two universities mentioned by Li Yuanyuan. He noted that Jilin University was an important strategic partner of the University of Sheffield, and there was great prospect for the cooperation between the two universities. He positively responded to the construction and cooperation prospect of the two universities in multiple traditionally advantageous disciplines including life science, material and chemistry, as well as emerging research fields like artificial intelligence, new energy, space science, and human and animal common medicine, and hoped that the two universities would work together in the above-mentioned areas to jointly improve international competitiveness.

During the exchange week, academician Yu Jihong, Director of the Future Science International Cooperation Joint Lab, met with Professor Simon Jones and Professor Simon Foster of the Science Department of the University of Sheffield, and shared information regarding the future cross-disciplinary multi-area cooperation. Professor Simon Jones and Professor Simon Foster held three academic report sessions for over 200 teachers and students of the Science Department of our university, had discussion with relevant heads of the School of Life Science, School of Chemistry, School of Physics, and the AIDS Vaccine National Engineering Lab, and visited the new battery physics and technology key lab of the Ministry of Education. Both parties discussed mutual visits of teachers and students, joint training and scientific research, aiming to promote more diversified and deeper cooperation in multiple areas.

Jilin University-The University of Sheffield Exchange Week will become a new starting point for the pragmatic cooperation of the two universities, and the strategic cooperation framework will become an important opportunity for the two universities to jointly respond to the challenges of globalization and the era of information and to realize great-leap-forward development.
