Jilin University - St. Petersburg University Exchange Week Successfully Held in Jilin University

An academic exchange group consisting of 12 experts and scholars from St. Petersburg University (SPbU) visited Jilin University to participate in the Jilin University-St. Petersburg University Exchange Week on May 22-24, 2018. Wu Zhenwu, Vice President of the JLU, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Zhang Guangcui, Director of the Office of Global Engagement.

In his speech, Wu Zhenwu first introduced the development status of the JLU, the progress of cooperation with Russian universities and the efforts made under the “Double First-Class” Initiative. He told that the JLU cherished the cooperation opportunities with the SPbU. Since there were great potential for cooperation between both parties in many fields such as discipline construction, scientific research, and talent nurturing, he expected a better mutual understanding and pragmatic cooperation between both parties will be achieved by taking the advantage of the exchange week.

The SPbU representative Timur Lepikhin gave an introduction to the basics, governance concepts and development strategy of the SPbU, and shared information about its priority disciplines, research progress in various fields, and major project resources in recent years. The SPbU and the JLU shared the same development philosophy, both attaching great importance to international cooperation, he said, they were willing to work with the JLU to increase channels and resources for exchange between experts and scholars and for joint technological innovations, with a view to enhancing the international competitiveness of the two universities.

Present were heads of relevant units of the JLU, including the Office of Science and Technology, the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Talent Service Office, the Office of Global Engagement, the International Center of Future Science (ICFS), the School of Philosophy and Sociology, the School of Law and the College of Mechanical Science and Engineering.

During the exchange week, Russian experts and scholars had in-depth communication and match-making meetings with relevant units of the JLU, including the ICFS, the School of Philosophy and Sociology, the School of Law, the College of Northeast Asian Studies, the Mathematics School & Institute, the College of Mechanical Science and Engineering, the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Simulation and Control (ASCL) and the College of Communication Engineering. Both parties discussed research areas of common interests and forms of collaboration. The SPbU experts and scholars also gave five academic reports.

Founded in 1724, the St. Petersburg State University is the first institution of higher learning in Russia. Like the Moscow State University, it has a superior status in Russia. The president of the university is directly appointed by the President of the Russian Federation. President Putin and Prime Minister Medvedev are famous alumni. The university has produced nine Nobel Prize winners in the fields of physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, economics, mathematics and literature from 1904. It holds the 20th place in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018 and ranks No. 71-80 in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings. Based on years of cooperation, the JLU and the SPbU signed a cooperation agreement and student exchange program agreement in 2016.
