College of Communication Engineering and Feng Chia University Held Successful Exchange

The College of Communication Engineering (CCE) has successfully docked with its counterpart in Feng Chia University (FCU) on April 23, 2019. This exchange is part of the tripartite professorship exchange workshop initiated by Jilin Universitys Office of Global Engagement between Jilin University, Hanyang University in Seoul, and Feng Chia University in Taipei. The FCU delegation was led by FCU Deputy President Dr. Chuang-Chien Chiu, and included Dr. Wen-Hsiang Lai Director of the Office of International Affairs, Dr. Chow-Yen Desmond Sim, Dean of the College of Information and Electrical Engineering, Mr. Kuang-Chung Chen, Staff Secretary of the Office of International Affairs. The delegation was welcomed by Mr. Li Hongwei, CCE Secretary of the Party, Dr. Hu Fengyi, Deputy Dean, as well as CCE faculty representatives.

 

During the exchange, Party Secretary Mr. Li Hongwei, welcomed the FCU delegation on behalf of CCE, and made a brief introduction of Jilin University’s history, its size, and its programs. Mr. Li also introduced the college, its scale and its specialty.

 

Next, Dr. Hu Fengyi, made a detailed presentation on CCE’s current state, including specialty programs, research and results, international cooperation, teaching, and high-end talent recruitment. Specifically, Dr. Hu introduced programs including CCE’s seven provincial/ministerial level research platforms, two undergraduate pilot teaching centers, eight collaborative laboratories with enterprises; recent research, including major grants, publications and patents; recognition from competitions and awards for both faculty and students; and joint degree programs, international exchange, and the introduction of quality overseas courses.

 

In turn, Professor Chow-Yen “Desmond” Sim, dean of FCU’s College of Information and Electrical Engineering, introduced the research team, research interest, school-enterprise collaboration, and publications of his college. Deputy president Dr. Chuang-Chien Chiu next talked about the history of cooperation between the two universities, FCU as a whole, as well as FCU’s current colleges and programs. Dr. Chiu shared FCU’s experiences in exploring the frontiers of higher learning, including their “micro-credits”, “deep bowl” education model, “freshman project”, and “5W2H” critical thinking method, as well as “six hats” thinking training model and other distinct training and teaching models.

 

During the exchange, faculties of the two schools engaged in discussions on how to deepen academic and education cooperation. They discussed about experience on cultivating students and shared advanced philosophy in teaching models. During the discussion, they also expressed the desire to cooperate in related disciplines and worked out plans in student exchange, research collaborations, and joint-degree programs.

 

The workshop session has been an inspiration for CCE, and brought lots of food for thought for future discipline development.
