On May 31, 2021, Professor Su Chunyi from Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science of Concordia University in Canada gave a webinar for the faculty and students at the College of Communications Engineering (CCE) Jilin University. The webinar was conducted via both online and offline methods, and presided over by Professor Zhou Miaolei. More than 50 CCE faculty members, doctors and postgraduates attended the webinar.

In his report titled “Lectures on Modeling and Control of Hysteresis Nonlinearities in Smart Actuators”, Professor Su introduced the current challenges posed by the hysteresis nonlinearities in new smart actuators, mainly including control system oscillation, reduction of control accuracy, and even system instabilities. Starting from the current modeling methods of hysteresis nonlinearities, he also analyzed the future research directions of hysteresis modeling. Finally, he pointed out the new challenges faced by the control of hysteretic nonlinear systems.

After the report, Professor Su had active academic discussions with faculty and students present, and answered their questions in detail. The webinar enhanced the understanding of our faculty and students on the modeling and control of new smart materials, which benefited us a lot.

Su Chunyi is a tenured distinguished research professor at Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science of Concordia University in Canada, and the director of the Robotics and Mechatronics Laboratory. Su has long been engaged in the theoretical and applied research on robot control and precision mechatronic system control, and achieved a series of original outcomes with international influence. He has chaired and participated in major national projects of Canada, and key research projects of government departments and cross-national companies such as the Strategic Plan for the National Science Foundation. He has published over 500 articles in prestigious journals and international conferences in his area of research. His SCI publications have been cited for over 9,400 times, many of which are rated as ESI highly cited papers. So far, his articles have been cited for over 15,400 times according to Google Scholar, with an h-index of 64. Clarivate Analytics has listed him as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2019 and 2020. Professor Su used to serve as associate editor of top journals in the area of control such as IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control (theory), and IEEE Trans. on Control Systems Technology (application). He is currently on the editorial boards of over 20 international journals including IEEE Trans. on Cybernetics, and Mechatronics, an authoritative journal in the field. He is an outstanding speaker at IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. He has served as chairman, steering committee chairman, etc. of IEEE international conferences for nearly 30 times. In 2009, he won the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitation Fellowship.
